Shoebox Parade Float Tutorial

10 Apr

Last month on my sweet daughters school calender there was a Friday marked with Shoebox Spring Parade.  I thought “oh how fun!”  Then I thought “wait….what is a shoe box parade”  I googled and really didn’t get much info.  Just a lot of pictures posted from other parents.  I didn’t find was a lot of tutorials or how to’s.  There is a picture-less one on ehow but this mama needs pictures.  After looking through what I could find, I figured out how to put one together.  It’s really not hard which I guess is why there aren’t a lot of tutorials out there.  BUT….HELLO! I am a BLOGGER!  Light-bulb goes off and TAH-DAHHH!

The Shoebox Parade Float Tutorial is born!

There are many many different ways to make a shoebox parade float.  For a float like mine you will need:
a shoebox or small box
paper to cover the box
scissors
mod podge or glue
flower embellishments
paint for details
lots of colorful tissue paper

I didn’t get a before pic of the shoebox.  I actually had the blog post tutorial epiphany when I finished covering the box with paper.  I was really surprised with how great it looks.  I just used some colorful printer paper.  I used mod podge to adhere it to the box and then put a coat on the outside.

I braided yellow yarn for the pull string.  Ya know, like Rapunzel’s hair.  Now, I put the box together before I attached the pull string.  OOPS!  I had to tear the box open a little bit to get it in there.  I made an anchor like thing-a-mah-bob out of thick cardboard.  I strung the pull string through it.  Globbed on a bunch of hot glue and attached it in the box and puledl the pull string through a hole I made.  I made the cardboard anchor in hopes that the pull string wouldn’t come out during the parade.  It worked great!  She’s STILL pulling the float around the house.

I used some more cardboard to make a lil seat for Rapunzel to sit on.
After gluing the cardboard seat onto the box I painted it.
Once it was dry I went over the with some gold glitter to add a little princess glam to it!!
While I was working on the float I was actually drinking from a Rapunzel cup and I noticed this pretty detail.  I got out my paints, matched the color the best I could and tried to add some pretty detail.
Not perfect but not so bad huh?
I made a bunch of my tissue paper rosettes and added them here and there.
Next I used my bead reamer and punched whole in the box here and there.
Alice and I collected some old fake flowers we had and pulled off the flowers.  After punching holes in the shoebox I had Alice attach all the flowers.  It was really nice giving her the reigns on the decorating.  She loved it.
While she decorated I took some tissue paper and made a ruffle like piece to glue to the bottom.  I just folded up the tissue paper horizontally inch by inch.  After I glued the strip around the bottom of the shoebox  I made some little cuts and fluffed them up a bit.
After we were finished we sat Rapunzel down.  I put on a seat-belt made from a purple pipe cleaner around her, pulled the ends through the back and tied them.
You can hardly see the seat-belt huh?
I added some more flowers to the back to hide the pipe cleaner seat-belt and the painted pink skewer that added a little stability.
I attached a little Pascel doll too.  Cuz, you can’t have Rapunzel without Pascel right?
And here she is! Alice’s Spring Parade Shoebox Rapunzel Float!!
Someone decided they weren’t getting enough attention!

Here are a few pictures from the parade.  I pixel-ed the other kiddo’s faces.

Here are few other cute floats the kids brought.
And there is my sweet Alie again! 🙂

Thanks so much for stopping by! 🙂

Bright and Cheery Spring Mantel

21 Mar
I’ve noticed that my sense of style for my home revolves around Alice.  Last year I went with soft pretty pastels, as Alice was still in toddler mode. She had a sweet soft squeaky voice.  She wore lots of soft pastels.  This year the sweet squeaky voice is a little bit more grown up.  She likes to wear bright happy colors.  She’s rambunctious, full of life and always happy.  She is definitely a CHEERY kind of girl.  I noticed all this last night while I was taking pictures of the mantel and thinking of last years.
I used an old sheet that once belonged to my precious nephew Khaleeq.  Khaleeq is now a precious angel in Heaven above.  With this, my wreath now has a sweet sentimental value doesn’t it?  My hubby gave me the idea to add the pom pom flowers and ladybugs.  I especially love the ladybugs, they are Alice’s favorite.  Her nursery was all ladybugs and she was even a ladybug for her first Halloween.  The wreath was just too small to hang on the shutters by itself.  So, I made a pennant banner from the sheet.  I love the way they look together.

I plan on writing up a tutorial on how to make this wreath later this weekend.  It’s so easy, y’all will LOVE it!

I use more of Khaleeq’s sheet and wrapped these candles.  I left the burlap on a couple of the candles I had decorated for Valentine’s day and added matching green flowers.
I added our Bless this Family piece my hubby bought next to the candles.
For the other side, I added an antique glass bottle that was once my Grandma’s, a couple little glass jars filled with green glass beads and tied with burlap, an Easter cross I found at Walmart and my newly painted candle holder (sometimes cake stand) with a sweet bright red ceramic bird on top.
Here is my spring mantel all together!

What do y’all think??  I’m really happy with it!  Make sure you come back later this week to see how to make this cute wreath.

10 Faith Based Kids Crafts for Easter

15 Mar

I’m finding it a little bit challenging to teach my 3yr old what Easter really means.  Trying to distract her from the Easter bunny and coloring eggs with biblical lessons and literature is a just not working.  Go figure that one! HAHA!  I’m not sure that would work on a 13 yr old.  So, I’ve been looking for clever and crafty ideas to show her.  And I found some really great ideas that I would LOVE to share.

There she is, my precious girl!  See her cute painting?  I found that idea on Ministry to Children.  It is SUPER simple to do.  You take paper, using tape make a cross on the paper, hand your kids some water colors and have them paint around the cross, pull off the tape and you have a beautiful handmade piece of Easter art work to cherish forever!!  On the site there is a bit of discussion about the tape pealing off the paper or tearing because of being wet.  I found that if I used medium cardstock and let the painting dry before pealing the tape off it worked out perfectly.

NoBunny Loves You like Jesus
Over at Detail-Oriented Diva, Natalie has made some SUPER cute Christian based Easter basket fillers.  She made those cute NoBunny Loves You like Jesus goodie bags up there.  Now, I know these aren’t necessarily crafts but if you get your kids to help you make them as gifts….well then it’s a CRAFT!  She also made these…
Jesus Cares!
Be Fishers of Men
I love them!  It’s so hard to find faith based fillers for Easter baskets these days.  She includes jpg images so you can print your own labels and make these treat bags for your kids baskets too.  And she made a girl and boy version of each printable.

Resurrection Rolls

I’ve seen these before, heard of them but never made Resurrection Rolls.  This year I’m really excited to try this.  Alice is old enough now to understand the whats and whys of this project.  It’s the PERFECT time and I found a great post at Homegrown Mom for them.  It’s nicely detailed which is great for someone like me, who is making them for the first time.  I know, it seems simple enough right?  Especially for those of you that have made these.  But trust me, I can screw up boiling water!!  So, I greatly appreciate detail and explanation!!  She even gives her input and ideas in how she presents and works out the lessons involved.

Jelly Bean Prayer Easter Gift
At Mama Jenn I found another great idea.  You fill a jar full of jelly beans, attach the jelly bean Easter payer and you have a sweat and cute Easter gift that teaches you about the meaning of Easter.  Each color represents something specific about Easter.
Jelly Bean Cross Craft
And then I found the same idea but with a cross at Apples for Teachers.  You cut out a cross from paper then write or print the poem on the cross.  Then cut out cute little jelly bean shapes in all the colors of the poem and have your kids glue the jelly beans onto the cut out cross.

I also found at Mama Jenn this cute idea for a homemade Easter hat that is perfect to make with your kids.  She was inspired to make this with her daughter after reading two special Easter books about Easter Hats.  They made this sweet hat here from a paper plate, paper bowl, paint, ribbon, glue and fake flowers.

At My Bible Crafts, I found this cute New Creature Butterfly Card.  The site includes printables, instructions and ideas on how to talk about meaning of being a new creature in Christ while creating this card with your kids.
Last year Alie and I (mostly me) made this Tissue Paper Cross as an Easter decoration in her room.  This year, now that she’s a little holder I can’t wait to make some with her.  This is a fun craft to do with your kids and so I HAVE TO share it with y’all!! 🙂
If y’all have any other great ideas, posts or tutorials on faith based Easter crafts for kids I would LOVE to hear them.  Please share!!  I’m a newbie at this, so I need all the help I can get.  I was raised in a Muslim home (my dad COMPLETELY respects my decision to make Jesus my Lord and Savior) and I gave my life to Christ just 13 yrs ago.  Now that I’m raising Alice and teaching her about Jesus, I suddenly feel like I first opened my bible last week!!  It’s amazing the questions she will ask me about Jesus and it’s so disappointing when I stammer and stutter trying to find an answer.  So any help, advice or tips are highly welcome and appreciated.

I hope y’all love these ideas as much as I do!  I can’t wait to show you when Alie and I work on them together.

UPDATE!!  I found a few more great Easter ideas I wanted to share!!
At Mom On Timeout, Trish shares how to make these awesome Coin Covered PAID IN FULL Crosses!
And at This Little Project, Jedda shares several Faith Based Easter Craft projects

Purple Ombre Rose Cake Tutorial

9 Mar

For my moms birthday I really wanted to make her a special cake.  I missed the last two birthday as I was living in Phoenix at the time.  I’ve seen so many GORGEOUS cakes on pinterest and in the blogsphere.  Including my own! Which really put a big smile on my face to see how many times it’s been pinned!!  Which cake you ask??  Well here, let me show you!! 🙂

This is the cake I made Alice for her 3rd birthday

I decided to try out the Rose Cake.  I followed the tutorial from I Am Baker
But first I wanted to make an ombre style cake in purple which is my moms favorite color.

For the batter I just used a white cake mix.  Someday I will step outside of the box and make something like this…

White Almond Sour Cream Cake from Our Daily Obsessions

But for now I just used a mix. For colors I used 6 drops of red food coloring and 3 drops of blue for the lightest. 10 red and 5 blue, then 16 red and 8 blue, the darkest was 30 red and 15 blue.  I also used 6 red and 3 blue for the white icing.

The layers were thin so I baked them according to the cupcake directions on the box.  That actually worked out perfect.

After they were baked I layered them and iced them in between.

Then I got to work on the roses.

It’s was a bit tricky for me to get the swirls just right.  I kept scooping the blobs I made off and would try again.  Finally I think I got it down pretty good.

But then, (insert these three dramatic chords, A minor, C# minor, and E minor here!) this started to happen!!

The icing started to melt and ooze.  There were holes everywhere too!  IF you pay attention to the I Am Baker Tutorial, she tells you how to cover up those holes.  I also learned through a little research that it’s always best to make your own frosting.  Adding a bunch of watery food coloring to store bought frosting makes it runny.  Also if you add little bits of powered sugar it will thicken up your frosting.

Good thing from far away you really don’t notice the imperfections!!

And now for the inside!!  I love the way it looks. I do wish it was just a bit more purpley.  I’ll have to work on that next time, or maybe just buy purple food coloring.

I thought this next little trick was kinda neat.  I’ve seen a few other bloggers do this.  Some even as far as to make a permanent cake stand.  Mine was just a quick lil prop!

I took an old ugly gold candle holder and painted it white.

Then just layered the plate onto!  VIOLA cake stand!!

The good thing about it all is my mom a.k.a. Grandma loved it!!  I don’t think it’s so bad for my first time.  Now that I’ve learned a thing or two about it I’m sure it will be even better next time!

What do you think?  Have you ever tried to make a Rose Cake or a colorful ombre layered cake?

Mounds Inspired Cupcakes

24 Feb

I gotta tell y’all, these cupcakes are DELICIOUS!  I made them for my sister’s birthday.  She LOVES chocolate and coconut.

My sister Nori.

You will need this:
White cake mix
Coconut extract
Snack sized Mounds chocolate candies
Eggs and oil for cake mix
7oz bag of sweetened coconut flakes
Milk chocolate icing
Cup cake liners and pan

Prepare the cake mix according to package instructions.  If you have a precious princess kitchen helper….put her to work!
After it was done, I added 4 teaspoons of the coconut extract and mixed it in well.  Then I added half the bag of coconut flakes and gently folded it in to the mixture.  Then I baked the cupcakes according to the package instructions.
Once they were done and cooled I cut the snack sized Mounds bars in half.

I added a half of the candy on top of a cupcake.  Iced over and around it.  Then sprinkled the tops with the remaining coconut flakes.

DELICIOUS!!

My sister was very happy!

Paper Rose Wreath Tutorial

6 Feb

Ain’t she a beauty!!?  I have wanted to make a paper rose wreath for a long time.  I’m so happy I finally got around to it and I’m SO HAPPY with how great it looks.
My paper rose wreath finished off my Valentine’s Day mantel perfectly!

I am the guest blogger at DecorChick today!!  AND I’m sharing the tutorial for THIS pretty paper rose wreath over there!!  So, if you’d love to know how to make one be sure to stop by Decor Chick today!  My tutorial includes the Silhouette version of this wreath.  Yep, I used my Silhouette for this one!

Before you head over to DecorChick I wanted to share a few “behind the scenes” photos of the making of this wreath.

After the Silhouette cut my spirals for this wreath my daughter held this up like this and started to dance and giggle. Makes for a fun decoration piece huh?

Once you’ve cut out your spirals the left over paper makes for a great cat bed!

The Silhouette cutting a bazillion spirals for you is FANTASTIC! But, you still have to spin and glue those bazillion spirals.  You spend ALL DAY spinning and gluing and then you end up in bed….with a hot glue gun!!!

I spinned and glued into the wee hours of the morning.  This was my view for the night….

That’s my husband playing MW3, probably very happy that I wasn’t bugging him about watching TV.  I was busy burning my fingers in bed!!  I did talk to him though, the whole time.  Whether he listened or not is yet to be determined!

OK, I’m done!  Thanks for stopping by and if you’d like to make a paper rose wreath please go check out my guest post on DecorChick for the tutorial!

Love My Valentine’s Mantel

26 Jan

I’m really happy with my mantel this year.  NOT that I didn’t love my mantel last year!!  But this year…I have a Silhouette (thanks again, Emily!!)!  I made the Love My Valentine’s bunting banner with the Silhouette.
Now, I have wanted to make a paper flower wreath like the famous Stephanie Lynn Paper Rose Wreath for over year now.  I FINALLY did it!!  With help from my Silhouette!  I never got around to cutting a zillion spirals from paper.  The Silhouette did it for me 6 at a time!!

Isn’t she amazing!!  I am in love!!  She looks great on the shutters, too.  I was going to take down the heart bunting but I kinda like it there with the wreath.

I added my Valentine ribbon candles which I made with Kassi of Truly Lovely’s tutorial.  The flowers are from my husband.  He gave them too me last week after he came back from a business trip.  It was so sweet.  And even sweeter that Alice kept looking at me with my flowers and saying “You’re getting married?”  I told her “I am married, I married your daddy”.  And she would giggle!!  Oh, those cute lil love bears are from the GW in AZ.  The Bless This Family Birds my husband picked out at Michael’s one night while I stood and stared at the beading aisle for an hour.

Red ceramic hearts are also from the GW in AZ.  The pretty wire candle holder I found 75% off at Bed Bath and Beyond a few weeks back.  It’s really pretty with a lit candle inside.  I love that it says Laugh and Dance at the bottom.  Makes me think of Alice.

I almost left my mantel like this, thinking it didn’t need a wreath.

Here is another before…

OH! And a before with a smiling “take my picture for your blog mommy!”….
Ya know, she plays on her kiddie laptop and says “I’m working on my blog” It’s TOO CUTE!!!

So, here is my Valentine’s Day Mantel!

What do y’all think??  Do you love it as much as I do??

Thanks so much for stopping by!
I’m linking up at Beth’s Valentine’s Day link party!!  Are you??
