The Sentimental Wind Dancer

17 May

If you’ve been following me for some time, then you know I love to create things out of my sweet Alie Marie’s old blankets and clothes, ya know, the ones that are just too stained to donate.  It’s just so much sweeter, right?

Some old posts of baby blanket and baby clothes craftiness!

At World Market one night I saw this adorable ribbon wind dancer.  I knew I wanted to make one.  Then, I thought I could do this with strips of Alie’s out grown clothes and old blankets.

I cut my strips and then made a circle from a piece of cardboard.  I attached monofilament cord to the circle.

Then I tied the strips to the circle.

This is what it looks like hanging up.

Pretty cute eh?  Here check out what it looks like on the patio!

What do you think??  We, Alie and I LOVE it!!  It’s perfect for Spring or Summer!

NOW, for the lessons learned in making this: First, you’ll want to reenforce your cardboard circle or use strong plastic or wire for the circle.  My cardboard circle is already bowing in places.
Second, after striving for PERFECTLY cut strips of fabric, I decided to just cut them thinking I would trim them up after.  Then realizing I liked the unevenness of them.  I think it gives it a “Shabby Chic” kinda look.

I really want to make a few more now for Alie’s room.  I think they would look great hanging from her ceiling.

The FABULOUS Kate of Centsational Girl is hosting the Outdoor Ideas Party portion of the Home May’d Link Party Series.  I am linking this beauty up.  Get your Outdoor Ideas ready!  I hope to see you there!

Rosette Spring Wreath

20 Apr

First, let me mention to all you Mommies out there, ya know how we always end up with that pile of old baby clothes that has stains on it and you feel bad donating them because of it.  WELL……you can cut them up and create sweet sentimental pieces of art for your house.  Case in point, my NEW Spring Wreath.  See all those pretty little rosettes.  They are each made from pieces of Alie’s old clothes.

Click here for my fabric rosette tutorial!!  You can kinda tell it’s all cotton play clothes.  Aren’t those the clothes that usually get stained so bad, there isn’t much hope for them….until now.

Now, have you seen the ADORABLE Spring Wreath from Myra with The Casabella Project?  I LOVE it.  Now, I didn’t have a wooden sign to recreate it, so I used some cut up a cereal box, some scrapbook paper and made one.  I used letter stickers for S-P-R-I-N-G.

I cut out that cute little bird from scrapbook paper too.

I really love that little yellow circle heart I made.  It is yellow construction paper and the heart is a rub on transfer.  BUT I just didn’t like how it looked on the sign.  SO…I made this circle heart from scrapbook paper and different rub on transfer.
Much better right?

Even after adding all the rosettes, it seemed like something was missing.

My Sisters-In-Law, Teresa with Get Nestled In and Emily with DecorChick! gave me a few inspirational ideas.  I came up with this.

I wrapped it in white tulle.  What do you think?  I really like it but it still needs something!  Funny story about the tulle.  After I had done this and went to grab my phone to take a pic and send to Teresa and Emily to see what they thought, I actually had a text from Teresa that said “maybe wrap it in tulle?”  HA!! How’s that for “Great Minds Think Alike?”  My hubby suggested that I trace the spring letters to bring them out a little.  They are kinda washed away, aren’t they?

I traced the letters with a turquoise marker and even added a little magenta and green coloring to the letters themselves.  Better huh?  Sometimes them hubby’s know what they’re talking about….sometimes!
OK, so it’s done.  I think?  Does it need anything else?  What do you think?

Thanks so much for stopping by!
p.s. I had to add that while I was constructing my spring sign I was browsing around Kelly’s blog Running With Glitter and I saw her cute header that said ” I ❤ Spring” and I actually changed my plans and made my sign say ” I ❤ Spring” as well. Thanks for the inspiration, Kelly!!

Fabric Rosette Tutorial

17 Jan
Want to know how to make fabric rosettes?  I first learned how to make fabric rosettes back in September.  You can read about that here.

Here is a quick and I hope, simple tutorial on how to make fabric rosettes!
You will need:
A strip of fabric.
Hot glue gun and glue sticks.
Beads for embellishing.

First take a strip of fabric and knot it in the middle.

Place a dab of hot glue on the knot and wrap the fabric around it and hold it for a few seconds.
Then twist the ends and begin to wrap it around the knot. Place a small dot of hot glue every time you wrap the twisted fabric around. Becareful where you place the glue. You don’t want it to show when your rosette is done. I STILL have an issue with this.
See how the ends flap out sometimes?  You can close these up really nice using a little hot glue. Just make sure you place the glue in a well hidden areas.

Now add some beads. Again becareful of how much glue you use. I still have a problem with this too. You only need the tiniest dab of glue for these beads. This rosette is also a perfect example of why you should be careful where you place the glue while making your rosette.

I would LOVE to see yours if you try this tutorial and if you have any questions please feel free to ask!

Art from Sentimental Baby Blankets

13 Sep

I have a stack of Alie’s baby blankets that are my favorites and can not seem to part with.  Not THE receiving blanket she came home from the hospital with or the generic hospital blanket, but others that she seemed to love the most.  I got adventures one day and decided to try to make a piece of art from them.  Something Alie could have in her room for as long as she wanted.  I imagined that one day I would tell her “those are your baby blankets” and she’d be filled with nostalgia!  I took a few that weren’t as important as the others, just in case I screwed everything up, so I wouldn’t cry too hard!!  I followed DecorChicks Rosette Tutorial and made a few rosettes out of her blankets!

I cut strips from the blankets.

Then you take your strips and tie a knot in the middle.  Twist, twist, twist. Roll the twist around the knot and keep rolling.  Dab bits of hot glue as you go.  Side note: Hot glue is HOT…like seriously HOT!
These are my rosettes.
I hot glued some little faux pearls I had in my jewelry making kit on to them.  Then I took some crepe paper and twisted it to make the stems and leaves.

Weeks before I had bought a small shadow box frame from the GW for $1.  I took a piece of cut poster board and hot glued it onto the frame backing.  Then I hot glued the rosettes, steams and leaves on.
This is what it looks like in the frame.

This is where I placed it in her room.  It’s on a little entry wall to her room.

What do y’all think??  I LOVE IT!  I mean, they are my very first rosettes!!  Most importantly was if my sweet Alie Marie likes it.  Every time she notices it up on her wall she says “Oh look Mama, pretty flowers”  That right there, is the BEST compliment I could get!!

I posted some pictures of our San Diego trip for y’all to enjoy!! You can see them HERE!!!
