Purple Ombre Rose Cake Tutorial

9 Mar

For my moms birthday I really wanted to make her a special cake.  I missed the last two birthday as I was living in Phoenix at the time.  I’ve seen so many GORGEOUS cakes on pinterest and in the blogsphere.  Including my own! Which really put a big smile on my face to see how many times it’s been pinned!!  Which cake you ask??  Well here, let me show you!! 🙂

This is the cake I made Alice for her 3rd birthday

I decided to try out the Rose Cake.  I followed the tutorial from I Am Baker
But first I wanted to make an ombre style cake in purple which is my moms favorite color.

For the batter I just used a white cake mix.  Someday I will step outside of the box and make something like this…

White Almond Sour Cream Cake from Our Daily Obsessions

But for now I just used a mix. For colors I used 6 drops of red food coloring and 3 drops of blue for the lightest. 10 red and 5 blue, then 16 red and 8 blue, the darkest was 30 red and 15 blue.  I also used 6 red and 3 blue for the white icing.

The layers were thin so I baked them according to the cupcake directions on the box.  That actually worked out perfect.

After they were baked I layered them and iced them in between.

Then I got to work on the roses.

It’s was a bit tricky for me to get the swirls just right.  I kept scooping the blobs I made off and would try again.  Finally I think I got it down pretty good.

But then, (insert these three dramatic chords, A minor, C# minor, and E minor here!) this started to happen!!

The icing started to melt and ooze.  There were holes everywhere too!  IF you pay attention to the I Am Baker Tutorial, she tells you how to cover up those holes.  I also learned through a little research that it’s always best to make your own frosting.  Adding a bunch of watery food coloring to store bought frosting makes it runny.  Also if you add little bits of powered sugar it will thicken up your frosting.

Good thing from far away you really don’t notice the imperfections!!

And now for the inside!!  I love the way it looks. I do wish it was just a bit more purpley.  I’ll have to work on that next time, or maybe just buy purple food coloring.

I thought this next little trick was kinda neat.  I’ve seen a few other bloggers do this.  Some even as far as to make a permanent cake stand.  Mine was just a quick lil prop!

I took an old ugly gold candle holder and painted it white.

Then just layered the plate onto!  VIOLA cake stand!!

The good thing about it all is my mom a.k.a. Grandma loved it!!  I don’t think it’s so bad for my first time.  Now that I’ve learned a thing or two about it I’m sure it will be even better next time!

What do you think?  Have you ever tried to make a Rose Cake or a colorful ombre layered cake?

A Birthday Wish sent to Heaven

1 Oct

On this day in 1999 God blessed us with a precious Angel.  My sweet nephew, Khaleeq.  Khaleeq went to be with our Heavenly Father two years ago, just 7 days after he turned 10.  We miss him so very much.  Below are a few posts I wrote about him last year.

Hubby’s Shark Cake

18 Aug

Do you remember me mentioning making a shark cake for my hubby on his birthday?  Well, this is it!!!

I was going for an ocean look with the frosting and with the actual color of the cake.

The shark I made with the same recipe you use for cake pops.  It’s really just crumbled up cake (the tops cut off when you even them out) and frosting.  The fins the birthday boy himself made for me from cut pieces of cardboard.

This is before the foamy water was added.

And all finished…

The inside was shades of blue too.  I had intended for it to go from a deep dark ocean blue to the pretty turquoise ocean blue on top.  BUT, it didn’t quite work out that way.  Still, everyone including the hubby LOVED the cake.

What do y’all think???

Thanks for stopping by!

Happy Father’s Day

19 Jun

My dad is a wonderful father.  He NEVER denies his kids.  For as long as I can remember, anything we ever needed he gave to us.  We never lacked as children and as adults he is still just as giving and caring.  He taught us, guided us,  gave us all he could.

I love you, Dad! I miss you so much.  Happy Father’s Day!

My husband is an AMAZING father. He is loving, patient, funny, caring, kind, giving and so much more.  I love to watch him with our daughter. I love listening to the two of them play together.  I love to hear them pray together.  I love to see him teach her.  I love Saturday mornings when David and Alie watch cartoons together and they let mamma sleep in. I love watching her run to him when he gets home from work.  I love my husband more and more everyday watching him be a father to my girl. I love seeing what a wonderful caring and understanding father he is to his teenage daughter, Marlayna.
Happy Father’s David.  I thank God for you everyday.  HE knew the desires of my heart and gave me more. I love you, David.

David and I have been together for 13 years.  Marli actually started calling me “mom” way  back when this picture was taken.

Happy Father’s Day to all the other wonderful “Dad’s” in my life. My wonderful Father In Law, Eddie

My brother Jaddy

My Brother In Law, Randy

My Brother In Law, Lloyd

That is my Alie, Teresa is holding!

and My Brother In Law, Troy

Happy Father’s Day to all the other AWESOME DADS out there!!
