Bright and Cheery Spring Mantel

21 Mar
I’ve noticed that my sense of style for my home revolves around Alice.  Last year I went with soft pretty pastels, as Alice was still in toddler mode. She had a sweet soft squeaky voice.  She wore lots of soft pastels.  This year the sweet squeaky voice is a little bit more grown up.  She likes to wear bright happy colors.  She’s rambunctious, full of life and always happy.  She is definitely a CHEERY kind of girl.  I noticed all this last night while I was taking pictures of the mantel and thinking of last years.
I used an old sheet that once belonged to my precious nephew Khaleeq.  Khaleeq is now a precious angel in Heaven above.  With this, my wreath now has a sweet sentimental value doesn’t it?  My hubby gave me the idea to add the pom pom flowers and ladybugs.  I especially love the ladybugs, they are Alice’s favorite.  Her nursery was all ladybugs and she was even a ladybug for her first Halloween.  The wreath was just too small to hang on the shutters by itself.  So, I made a pennant banner from the sheet.  I love the way they look together.

I plan on writing up a tutorial on how to make this wreath later this weekend.  It’s so easy, y’all will LOVE it!

I use more of Khaleeq’s sheet and wrapped these candles.  I left the burlap on a couple of the candles I had decorated for Valentine’s day and added matching green flowers.
I added our Bless this Family piece my hubby bought next to the candles.
For the other side, I added an antique glass bottle that was once my Grandma’s, a couple little glass jars filled with green glass beads and tied with burlap, an Easter cross I found at Walmart and my newly painted candle holder (sometimes cake stand) with a sweet bright red ceramic bird on top.
Here is my spring mantel all together!

What do y’all think??  I’m really happy with it!  Make sure you come back later this week to see how to make this cute wreath.

Happy Mother’s Day

8 May

This is my Dad, my sister Kari, me and my Mom.  My sister Nori hadn’t shown up yet!  Check out my Dad in that suit and that grin!! HAHA!

I want to introduce y’all to my wonderful Mommy and all the other great mommy’s that are in my life.

My mommy!

The is my Mom and Dad on their wedding day.  My Dad is Pakistani, my Mom is Scottish.  My Mom wore the traditional Pakistani wedding attire.

I love my Mommy more than words can describe.  I miss her so much.  She’s back home in Texas and I haven’t seen her in a year.  I really miss her.  She is a wonderful mother.  Loving, giving and understanding.  She has always put everyone’s needs before her.  She has taught, guided and helped me become the mother I am today.  And if you ask my Alie she’ll tell you I’m a pretty great mommy!!

And that leads up to me becoming a mom.  Being a mom is joyous, beautiful, rewarding, challenging, tiresome, fun, exciting, but most of all, being a mom is the greatest gift and  blessing God has bestowed upon me.  I love my daughter with a love so deep in my heart and in my soul.  It’s more wondrous than I ever imagined.  It’s also hard and challenging.  There are days when I am Super Mom and I’m so proud but then there are days when I’m ashamed of my lack of patience and direction.   But everyday I am loved and needed beyond measure by the sweetest little girl in the whole wide world.  And everyday I love her and need her more than I could of ever imagine!  Loving my daughter and being a mom also makes me love my husband even more.  It’s beautiful the cycle of love in my life.  I am so happy and so blessed.  Now, every child is a miracle from God but my Alice Marie is my extra special miracle from God.  If you’d like to read that story you can do so here.

Now, I have a baking partner!
Someone to help me with the dishes.

A crafting partner.
A princess to dance with!
And tea parties every day!

I’m so proud to be her mommy.

I have also been a step mom to our beautiful Marlayna Renee for more than 13 years.

I would also like to wish a Happy Mother’s Day to my sweet mother in law.

Happy Mother’s Day to my sister Nori.  I miss you, the girls and Keek SO MUCH!!!

Sending Birthday Wishes to Heaven

1 Oct

On this day 11 years ago, God blessed our family with a very special angel.  My sister’s 1st born son.  She named him Khaleeq.  I didn’t know it at the time, but my sweet nephew was about to change my whole life.  He changed all of our lives, but for me he saved me from a road of destruction.  I am a very different woman today.  I fell in love with Khaleeq the moment I saw him being born.  I soon discovered that I couldn’t love him and live the life I was living.  I changed to be around him and to love him more.  This was long before we learned that he had a devastating terminal genetic disease.

He was a happy baby that seemed perfectly normal.  Smiling, talking, babbling, eating, and playing.  The worries of why he wasn’t walking started as his 1st birthday approached.  My sister consulted his doctor and was told everything from “boys are slower” to “your probably holding him to much.”  When he was 16 months old, he fell off of my sister’s bed.  She rushed him to the ER at Texas Children’s Hospital.  His CAT scan revealed that the fall did not hurt him, but they found that he had a rare genetic disease called Metachromatic Leukodystrophy.  After we read what this disease would do to our precious Khaleeq, none of us could believe it.  It literally knocked the wind out of each of us.  He did undergo a bone marrow transplant in 2002.  But it failed.  Most of the doctors informed my sister that Khaleeq would most likely not live past the age of 4.  God had other plans though, as He usually does.

I know that Khaleeq’s life was hard.  I know that he suffered, but I like to think that he lived so much longer than expected because he was constantly surrounded by love.  We ALL lived together in a large house my mother bought.  We all helped taking care of Khaleeq.  Even when my step daughter stayed with us during the summer, she would help give him his medications.  Sometimes she would lay down next to him and read to him.  Everything we did, we tried to include Khaleeq the best way we knew how.  I believe in spite the aliments his body had to endure, he was happy and felt very loved.  Everyday of his life he had us around him loving and caring for him.

He passed away last October 7th.  Just 7 days after he turned 10.  I remember as a kid, how special it was to reach those double digits.  He did it and he took that small victory with him to heaven.  I believe that he is running in heaven.  It is something he never could do here.  I believe that he misses us, but he is happy.  I believe that he is watching over us and loving us more and more everyday.  I believe that he saved me from a life that was going nowhere fast.  I believe that I will see him again someday.  I believe that he walks along side of Jesus as he tells Him silly story’s about us.

When Khaleeq was just a few days old, I remember looking at him and realizing I never want to let him down.  I still never want to let him down.  My heart aches with such pain because I miss him so much.  It hurts too, that I am so far away from my family and I can’t be there for them today and throughout this week.  I love Khaleeq and that love continues to grow to this day.

I wanted to share a little of his story with y’all.  Some of you have become wonderful new friends.  I want to share with y’all a few of my favorite pictures of Khaleeq.  All week I’ve been asking myself if I wanted to do this on his Earthly Birthday or his Heavenly Birthday.  I decided that I want to do this today, because this is the day God sent down His precious angel to our family.

His sisters picked out presents for him. They wrapped each one themselves. Took them to Khaleeq’s grave and opened them for him.

They also decorated his spot.

Alie was playing with his car.

If you would say a prayer for my sister Nori and her family today. My Mom and Dad were also very close to Khaleeq, say a prayer for them as well. They are in Houston with out my Brother, my Sister and myself. I miss them very much. I know today will be a very hard day for them. Thank you so much for reading this.

I made Khaleeq a birthday cake on his earthly birthday.  You can see that HERE.

My sister’s poem to Khaleeq written on 10/07/2010:

I went to your grave this morning after class.
I laid down on the grass next to your stone.
I remember when I would lay next to you in
all those hospital beds.
Watching your monitors all night long.
Running my fingers through your soft curly brown hair.
Falling asleep while gently patting your chest.
I tried to protect you from as much as I could.
Now I know that you have been protecting me from the start.
I am the disabled one.
Disabled from my grief and pain.
I closed my eyes and imagined you one looking down on me.
Helping me remember of what life should be.
I am so proud to be your mommy.
It warms my heart to think your soul is free.
I only have my imagination of what heaven will be.
I miss you and love you Khaleeq.
Love your mommy
