10 Faith Based Kids Crafts for Easter

15 Mar

I’m finding it a little bit challenging to teach my 3yr old what Easter really means.  Trying to distract her from the Easter bunny and coloring eggs with biblical lessons and literature is a just not working.  Go figure that one! HAHA!  I’m not sure that would work on a 13 yr old.  So, I’ve been looking for clever and crafty ideas to show her.  And I found some really great ideas that I would LOVE to share.

There she is, my precious girl!  See her cute painting?  I found that idea on Ministry to Children.  It is SUPER simple to do.  You take paper, using tape make a cross on the paper, hand your kids some water colors and have them paint around the cross, pull off the tape and you have a beautiful handmade piece of Easter art work to cherish forever!!  On the site there is a bit of discussion about the tape pealing off the paper or tearing because of being wet.  I found that if I used medium cardstock and let the painting dry before pealing the tape off it worked out perfectly.

NoBunny Loves You like Jesus
Over at Detail-Oriented Diva, Natalie has made some SUPER cute Christian based Easter basket fillers.  She made those cute NoBunny Loves You like Jesus goodie bags up there.  Now, I know these aren’t necessarily crafts but if you get your kids to help you make them as gifts….well then it’s a CRAFT!  She also made these…
Jesus Cares!
Be Fishers of Men
I love them!  It’s so hard to find faith based fillers for Easter baskets these days.  She includes jpg images so you can print your own labels and make these treat bags for your kids baskets too.  And she made a girl and boy version of each printable.

Resurrection Rolls

I’ve seen these before, heard of them but never made Resurrection Rolls.  This year I’m really excited to try this.  Alice is old enough now to understand the whats and whys of this project.  It’s the PERFECT time and I found a great post at Homegrown Mom for them.  It’s nicely detailed which is great for someone like me, who is making them for the first time.  I know, it seems simple enough right?  Especially for those of you that have made these.  But trust me, I can screw up boiling water!!  So, I greatly appreciate detail and explanation!!  She even gives her input and ideas in how she presents and works out the lessons involved.

Jelly Bean Prayer Easter Gift
At Mama Jenn I found another great idea.  You fill a jar full of jelly beans, attach the jelly bean Easter payer and you have a sweat and cute Easter gift that teaches you about the meaning of Easter.  Each color represents something specific about Easter.
Jelly Bean Cross Craft
And then I found the same idea but with a cross at Apples for Teachers.  You cut out a cross from paper then write or print the poem on the cross.  Then cut out cute little jelly bean shapes in all the colors of the poem and have your kids glue the jelly beans onto the cut out cross.

I also found at Mama Jenn this cute idea for a homemade Easter hat that is perfect to make with your kids.  She was inspired to make this with her daughter after reading two special Easter books about Easter Hats.  They made this sweet hat here from a paper plate, paper bowl, paint, ribbon, glue and fake flowers.

At My Bible Crafts, I found this cute New Creature Butterfly Card.  The site includes printables, instructions and ideas on how to talk about meaning of being a new creature in Christ while creating this card with your kids.
Last year Alie and I (mostly me) made this Tissue Paper Cross as an Easter decoration in her room.  This year, now that she’s a little holder I can’t wait to make some with her.  This is a fun craft to do with your kids and so I HAVE TO share it with y’all!! 🙂
If y’all have any other great ideas, posts or tutorials on faith based Easter crafts for kids I would LOVE to hear them.  Please share!!  I’m a newbie at this, so I need all the help I can get.  I was raised in a Muslim home (my dad COMPLETELY respects my decision to make Jesus my Lord and Savior) and I gave my life to Christ just 13 yrs ago.  Now that I’m raising Alice and teaching her about Jesus, I suddenly feel like I first opened my bible last week!!  It’s amazing the questions she will ask me about Jesus and it’s so disappointing when I stammer and stutter trying to find an answer.  So any help, advice or tips are highly welcome and appreciated.

I hope y’all love these ideas as much as I do!  I can’t wait to show you when Alie and I work on them together.

UPDATE!!  I found a few more great Easter ideas I wanted to share!!
At Mom On Timeout, Trish shares how to make these awesome Coin Covered PAID IN FULL Crosses!
And at This Little Project, Jedda shares several Faith Based Easter Craft projects

Purple Ombre Rose Cake Tutorial

9 Mar

For my moms birthday I really wanted to make her a special cake.  I missed the last two birthday as I was living in Phoenix at the time.  I’ve seen so many GORGEOUS cakes on pinterest and in the blogsphere.  Including my own! Which really put a big smile on my face to see how many times it’s been pinned!!  Which cake you ask??  Well here, let me show you!! 🙂

This is the cake I made Alice for her 3rd birthday

I decided to try out the Rose Cake.  I followed the tutorial from I Am Baker
But first I wanted to make an ombre style cake in purple which is my moms favorite color.

For the batter I just used a white cake mix.  Someday I will step outside of the box and make something like this…

White Almond Sour Cream Cake from Our Daily Obsessions

But for now I just used a mix. For colors I used 6 drops of red food coloring and 3 drops of blue for the lightest. 10 red and 5 blue, then 16 red and 8 blue, the darkest was 30 red and 15 blue.  I also used 6 red and 3 blue for the white icing.

The layers were thin so I baked them according to the cupcake directions on the box.  That actually worked out perfect.

After they were baked I layered them and iced them in between.

Then I got to work on the roses.

It’s was a bit tricky for me to get the swirls just right.  I kept scooping the blobs I made off and would try again.  Finally I think I got it down pretty good.

But then, (insert these three dramatic chords, A minor, C# minor, and E minor here!) this started to happen!!

The icing started to melt and ooze.  There were holes everywhere too!  IF you pay attention to the I Am Baker Tutorial, she tells you how to cover up those holes.  I also learned through a little research that it’s always best to make your own frosting.  Adding a bunch of watery food coloring to store bought frosting makes it runny.  Also if you add little bits of powered sugar it will thicken up your frosting.

Good thing from far away you really don’t notice the imperfections!!

And now for the inside!!  I love the way it looks. I do wish it was just a bit more purpley.  I’ll have to work on that next time, or maybe just buy purple food coloring.

I thought this next little trick was kinda neat.  I’ve seen a few other bloggers do this.  Some even as far as to make a permanent cake stand.  Mine was just a quick lil prop!

I took an old ugly gold candle holder and painted it white.

Then just layered the plate onto!  VIOLA cake stand!!

The good thing about it all is my mom a.k.a. Grandma loved it!!  I don’t think it’s so bad for my first time.  Now that I’ve learned a thing or two about it I’m sure it will be even better next time!

What do you think?  Have you ever tried to make a Rose Cake or a colorful ombre layered cake?

Mounds Inspired Cupcakes

24 Feb

I gotta tell y’all, these cupcakes are DELICIOUS!  I made them for my sister’s birthday.  She LOVES chocolate and coconut.

My sister Nori.

You will need this:
White cake mix
Coconut extract
Snack sized Mounds chocolate candies
Eggs and oil for cake mix
7oz bag of sweetened coconut flakes
Milk chocolate icing
Cup cake liners and pan

Prepare the cake mix according to package instructions.  If you have a precious princess kitchen helper….put her to work!
After it was done, I added 4 teaspoons of the coconut extract and mixed it in well.  Then I added half the bag of coconut flakes and gently folded it in to the mixture.  Then I baked the cupcakes according to the package instructions.
Once they were done and cooled I cut the snack sized Mounds bars in half.

I added a half of the candy on top of a cupcake.  Iced over and around it.  Then sprinkled the tops with the remaining coconut flakes.

DELICIOUS!!

My sister was very happy!

Breakfast Fritatta from Turkey Leftovers

26 Dec

This morning I looked up breakfast from turkey leftovers.  I found a bunch of recipes on Mr. Breakfast.com.  Y’all have to check out his website!!  It is FULL of awesome breakfast ideas.
So, for this I actually combined two of his recipes.  I used a little of the Turkey and Mashed Potato Fritatta and the Turkey and Spinach Fritatta.
This is how I made mine.
First you will need:6 eggs1/4  cup cream (I used hvy cream)1/2 a medium sized yellow onion2 cloves garlicEVOOshredded cheese 1 can of spinach2 cups chopped up leftover turkey10 tbls of mashed potatoessalt and pepper
I heated about 2 tbls of EVOO in a sauce pan over medium heat.  I then chopped my onions (coarsely) and chopped my garlic and added them to the hot EVOO.  Then I whipped the eggs and mashed potatoes together.  Once the onions were soft and translucent and poured the egg mashed potato mixture evenly into the pan.  I lowered the heat to medium-low.  Do not stir.  Let the egg potato mixture cook.  Chop up your turkey (I chopped mine up while it was still cold).  Thoroughly drain the spinach and them chop it up.
Once the eggs have set about half way (took about 3 to 4 minutes) sprinkle the turkey and spinach over the eggs.  Cover your sauce pan and let the eggs finish cooking.  This took about 5 minutes.  Uncover and sprinkle the shredded cheese all over the top.  Cover and let it melt takes about a minute.  Remove covered pan from heat and let it set for a few minutes.  Then cut into nice sized wedges and serve!
That’s it!!  It’s seriously delicious!!  My hubby added sour cream to his which was delish too!
Awesome side note: I took that picture with my NEW Sony Cybershot DSC-WX9 my super awesome hubby got me for Christmas!  After a long thought out few months I decided against an DSLR, which I know is like a bloggers must have.  BUT, I really wanted a camera that could snap a great picture of Alice in under 2 seconds!! ‘Cuz really that’s about all the time you have to get a pic for a 3 year old right?  I am IN LOVE with my new camera!  It has so many features including the gourmet food setting which I used for the pic up there!! It came out pretty great huh?  It even takes 3D pictures BUT you need a 3D TV to view them.  I kinda think that may be a ploy on my hubby’s part to buy a 3D TV!!  lol
Hope y’all had an awesome Christmas too!

Thanks for stopping by!

Alie’s Birthday Cake

6 Jun

For Alie’s cake I decided to do a layered rainbow cake in colors that matched her party!  If you buy the Walmart brand of food color it comes with a “how to” chart on the back.  SO helpful!

I only did 4 layers and although I really like how it turned out, I think for the next one I would like more layers and thinner layers too.

I frosted it with whipped white frosting.  I used a little bit of the frosting to make some polka dots for her cake.  I didn’t notice at the time but my cake carrier has a small lip inside that the handle fits into.  The frosting on the cake stuck to it. 😦

I made garland to go onto of the cake.  It’s tiny tissue paper pom poms!  They are so cute and fun to make! Tutorial HERE!

The cake with some of the decorations! Tutorials HERE!! and HERE!!🙂

Alie LOVED her cake!! 🙂

AND…..this is what it looked like on the inside!

It was a wonderful birthday for my sweet Alie Marie!  Click here to see more!

The Sweetest Cupcakes Ever

4 Feb
I hope you are not looking for some special secret passed down from Grandma to Grandma recipe.  You wont find that here.  What you will find is the Sweetest Cupcakes Ever.  Why you ask?  Because me sweet little princess of a daughter helped me make and decorate them.

This is what I used.  Found them at Target.
Alice placed the liners in our little pans.

Then we blended up the ingredients.  And for anyone who noticed YES that is the cereal bowl from the movie Friday!!  Hahaha!
Now, Mommy ran the blender.  I did let her hold it for a few seconds to get a feel of it and for this picture!  Sorry Ladies, Santa left my KitchenAid stand up mixer back at the North Pole.  He promised to bring it next Christmas.  I must say though, this little mixer is great and does everything I need!!
While Miss Alie napped the and after the cupcakes cooled.  I decorated them.
I really hope you noticed that I METICULOUSLY placed each heart and sprinkle.  I figured it was so EASY to make these I might as well spend a little extra time on making them pretty.  I wasn’t quite done by the time Alie woke up from her nap and so she took over the decorating from there and gave her Mommy a break.  PHEW! I needed one too!
She did a GREAT job.  Her cupcakes are just so precious.  I should tell y’all, they are her first!
How precious are her cupcakes? I’m so proud of my sweet little helper.

Thanks for stopping by!
